Me and My Luxembourg

Health

Finding a doctor or therapist, out-of-hours care, blood tests and how paying works.

Emergency: call 112 for an ambulance, day and night. For a GP in the evening or at the weekend, see out-of-hours care.

Finding a doctor

  • Doctena: book appointments online with GPs, dentists and specialists. You can filter by language; call the practice if the language matters to you.
  • Collège médical register: the official register of doctors and dentists allowed to practise in Luxembourg. Search by name or profession.
  • US Embassy: medical assistance: a guide to hospitals and doctors, with a list of doctors in Luxembourg (PDF).

Paying the doctor (PID)

  • PID (paiement immédiat direct): if your doctor or dentist uses it, the CNS pays its share straight to the practice. You pay only your personal contribution and any charges the CNS doesn’t cover. For doctors’ fees the CNS usually pays 88%, so you pay the other 12%; under-18s pay no personal contribution.
  • Not every practice uses it. PID is optional and there is no public list, so ask the practice when you book.
  • Without PID, you usually pay the whole bill first and then claim the CNS share back.
  • Other ways of not paying upfront are separate from PID: labs, pharmacies and hospitals normally bill the CNS directly, and people on a low income can apply for the tiers payant social through their commune’s social office.
  • CNS: Immediate Direct Payment (PID) · More in our healthcare payment guide

Therapists and psychologists

  • Psyregister (Société Luxembourgeoise de Psychologie): a search for psychologists and psychotherapists.
  • Costs: psychotherapy by a recognised psychotherapist is covered by the CNS. Sessions with a self-employed clinical psychologist are not reimbursed, though some top-up insurances pay part. Children and teenagers can get free help through the ONE (Office national de l’enfance).

Emergencies and out-of-hours care

  • Emergency: call 112 for an ambulance or the fire brigade, free, day and night. Police: 113.

  • Maisons médicales de garde (out-of-hours GP surgeries): walk in, no appointment. Weekdays 20:00 to midnight; Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays 8:00 to midnight. Phone (+352) 20 333 111. After midnight, call 112.
